First Night of Series “In Red Wheel”

Journalists of Astrakhan State University have presented a cycle of the historical series “In Red Wheel”. The six-series project tells about new martyrs who lived in Astrakhan in the early 20th century and who were tortured and killed by the Communistic regime.

The event has been held as a part of the Days of Orthodox Book that are held by the Astrakhan Regional Scientific Library. It took the project authors two years to complete their enormous work. To present it, they have invited representatives of the regional clergy and the cultural community, as well as our students specializing in History and in Journalism. During their presentation, the film makers have told how they were making their series, what issues they had to tackle, and what unexpected discoveries they made.

The project “In Red Wheel” has been performed by the team of the Astrakhan TV Media Center; it has been backed by the grant “Orthodox Initiative” provided by the Saint Seraphim of Sarov Fund. The six short series tell about lives of Astrakhan’s New Martyrs – Archbishop Mitrophan (Krasnopolsky), Archbishop Faddey (Uspensky), and priests Nikolay Zalessky, Vassiliy Zalessky, Nikolay Tarbeev, and Grigoriy Khlebunov. The series has been produced on the base of the book “Saints & Hermits of Piety in Astrakhan Land” written by Father Superior Iosif (Maryan). The series is to be broadcast on air by the local TV broadcasting company. Moreover, the series makers are holding talks to broadcast their work nationwide.
