2015 Shrovetide at ASU
Astrakhan State University has celebrated Shrovetide, the well-known Russian folk holiday that takes place in late winter or in early spring. Besides traditional holiday games and amusements in the University buildings, our volunteers have arranged a whole event to congratulate faculty and support staff of ASU.
Carrying Shrovetide pancakes and dancing round dances, the volunteers have been visiting lecture halls, units and centers of our University. They treated students, professors, and other people of ASU (including our Rector) with pancakes, which they baked themselves.
At 11.00 in the University Main Building, a whole series of traditional Russian games and amusements, folk dances and songs has been arranged. Anyone could take part in the holiday not just as a watcher, but also as a singer, or as a dancer, or as a game player. As the event organizers say, everything has been really splendid.
Shrovetide celebration became a good tradition at ASU 11 years ago. It is usually arranged by the faculty of our Department of Social Communications. Students of all our Departments act as holiday volunteers.
